Peripheral Neuropathy occurs when there is damage to the nerves generally in the hands and feet. It most commonly affects the feet. There are more than 100 types of peripheral neuropathy each one with its unique presentation, development and symptoms. Most often symptoms begin in the toes or feet and in most cases the condition worsens over time, spreading up the legs.

Peripheral Neuropathy occurs for many different reasons. The most common causes are diabetes, cancer treatment, vascular diseases, auto immune responses, alcoholism, and idiopathic (unknown cause). Neuropathy occurs when the nerves become damaged and no longer communicate properly with the brain. This miscommunication is what leads to symptoms. There are many different types of nerves that have different types of responsibilities and communicate different sensations or feelings to the brain. Multiple different types of these nerves can become damaged which explains different types of symptoms. This explains why people can have cold feet and burning pain at the same time.

There are various types of tests used to diagnose neuropathy but typically there are very few treatment options once someone is diagnosed.

Neuropathy is often progressive and can lead to complications. These complications include:

  • Difficulty walking
  • Loss of balance
  • Loss of independence
  • In severe cases, amputation

By the time most people come to our office they have gone to their regular doctor and been given prescription medications. This is usually the only option offered. Gabapentin, Neurontin, and Lyrica are the most common medications prescribed and are anti-seizure medications designed to slow down the brain so that the brain becomes less aware of the pain, attempting to make the person more comfortable. This is why many people complain that they can’t think very well when they are on these medications. These medications attempt to mask their symptoms and are in no way designed to correct the problem of neuropathy. Sadly, for most people it is the only option they are aware off.
